Mt. Hebron Celebrates Black History Month

By: Dahlia Sambhi

Honoring the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history, the Black Student Union (BSU) at Mt. Hebron High School spearheads initiatives to foster awareness, understanding, and progress within the school community.

Led by a dedicated team of student leaders, the BSU has embarked on a mission to amplify Black voices and commemorate the richness of Black culture and heritage.

“In general, Black Americans are demonized or seen as victims. That’s why the theme this year [for the door decorating competition] is Black people in the arts,” says Mt. Hebron Sophomore Tyson Smith, Secretary of the BSU. “It [the theme] shows black perseverance and black joy. Especially in a world where we are constantly seeing Black struggles,” continued Smith.
“I thought that it was extremely creative, and it most definitely highlighted some of the most influential black and brown figures in the industry,” said Sophomore Bowie Dockins. “The Stevie Wonder and John Legend door was FIRE in all caps,” she continued.

This year, the BSU has curated a series of cultural events and performances designed to showcase the diversity and vibrancy of Black culture. From poetry slams to musical performances, art exhibitions, and storytelling sessions, the BSU fosters an inclusive and welcoming environment where students can appreciate the richness of Black heritage through fun and interactive events. Notable events are the BSU Spirit Week and the Annual Door Decorating Contest.

“The Door Decorating Contest was so much fun, me and my friends spent all of the fifth period just finishing our door,” said Mt. Hebron Junior Izzy Ginegrich.

The BSU has championed initiatives to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the academic curriculum, extracurricular activities, and school policies through collaboration with school administrators and faculty members. They are to ensure that all students feel valued, respected, and empowered to succeed.

“We want to make it known, we are not going anywhere,” said Tyson Smith, Secretary of the BSU.

As Black History Month draws to a close, the work of the Black Student Union at Mt. Hebron High School serves as a testament to the power of student-led activism, advocacy, and collaboration. By embracing the principles of unity, empowerment, and resilience, the BSU exemplifies the spirit of Black excellence and collective progress. Through their tireless efforts, the union inspires hope, ignites change, and paves the way for a future where diversity is celebrated, equity is upheld, and every voice is heard.
