A Guide to Maryland Primary Elections

By: David Rosa Da Costa

As we approach the Primary Elections next Tuesday, it’s crucial to recognize that America is on the brink of another pivotal moment in its history. These elections, often marked by controversy and intrigue, hold immense importance for the future of our nation.

Mt. Hebron students are mainly intrigued by this year’s election, as most of the class of 2024 will be first-time voters this year. This is why it is essential to be educated on the candidates and the policies they stand by.

In Maryland, we have a unique closed primary system. This means that only individuals registered with a specific party can vote in that party’s primary. For instance, if you’re registered as an Independent, you won’t be able to participate in the primary presidential election in Maryland. Understanding this system is crucial for your participation in the upcoming elections.

Mt. Hebron senior Austin Morse said, “I would say there’s a reason why I registered as an Independent. I don’t want to be caught up in all of the silliness of the current political climate. I don’t want to be labeled as Republican or Democrat.”

Both parties have been pushed to the extreme, making some of Mt. Hebron’s students feel like no one speaks to them personally. Not labeling yourself as a Democrat or Republican does not limit your rights to voting since you can vote Independently.

The sentiment towards this is negative since the last Independent President, not associated with the Democratic or Republican party, was Millard Fillmore, the thirteenth President of the United States of America, from 1850 to 1853.

Morse stated, “Yeah, I mean, let’s be real. There are two parties. We live in a bipartisan world, but I have to try.”

Despite the complexities of our political landscape, the right to vote is a fundamental privilege and power that we are afforded by living in a democratic country. It’s a right that 47% of the world is unable to exercise (Our World in Data). Going out, voting and having your voice heard is not just a right; it’s a duty. The Mt. Hebron community actively supports its students and their right to vote in the upcoming election, recognizing the importance of each and every vote.

 Remember to VOTE!
