Spring has finally come to Maryland and with that brings Orioles baseball, otherwise known as Orange Spring. The O’s have shown their worth in the beginning of their season by winning their first seven games, including Boston’s opening day.
The last time the Orioles won the first five games of their season, they had a big turnout for playoffs. 1970 was the last time the O’s started out with a 7-0 record, and in return, they won the World Series at the end of the season. Many fans are hoping that this is a sign that the Birds will claim another Championship title, but the team still has over 150 games to make this possible.
“I’m really excited to go to games this year because it looks like most of the games they will play will be exciting to watch,” said sophomore Meghan Holquist.
Last year, the Orioles had a rough season with a record of 81-81 and finished third in their division, which resulted in the team not moving on to playoffs. Even though this was not what they expected, they decided to move on and focus on the 2016.
To kick off this season, the birds swept both the Minnesota Twins and the Tampa Bay Rays and also beat the Boston Red Sox in their first two games. Most of the games they have played have been very close in scores, but the team has been able to pull through and take the win.
The Orioles are currently first in the American League East, but they are also the only team in the MLB who has not lost a single game. The combination of stellar pitching and consistent offense has allowed the team to cruise by undefeated.
The birds’ top three hitters are Manny Machado, Mark Trumbo, and Joey Rickard. Machado, one of the team’s Golden Glove winners, leads the team with a .458 batting average and three homeruns. Trumbo and Rickard are new faces to the team after being acquired from the Mariners and the Tampa Bay Rays’ minor league system, respectively. Although they are unfamiliar to most Orioles fans, they are becoming well known very quickly. Trumbo is second in the team with a .417 batting average, and Rickard is third with a .409 batting average. The two have two combined home runs along with three RBI’s a piece.
“It’s amazing to see [the Orioles] do so well compared to last season. I think the team this year works together better which will make them the team to beat,” said senior Rachel Veslany.
Although the O’s have a strong offense, their defense is just as excellent. Brad Brach leads the pitching squad with two wins, no earned runs and seven strikeouts. Darren O’Day is also doing great things with his pitching. He has thrown four innings and struck out eight batters. In total, the team has 62 strikeouts and only a 2.5 combined earned run average. If the pitchers keep this up, the Orioles will have no problem winning games.
The Orioles will definitely be the team to beat as the team moves through the many games of the season. Hopefully, the Birds will redeem themselves from last year and go all the way to the World Series in October.
