Indoor Track Races To The Podium

On Feb. 3, the 3A Regional Track Meet took place. The Boys 4×800 meter relay team, consisting of juniors Justin Johnson and Gregory Bisant and seniors Alec Vaughan and Garrett Poston took first place in their event. Vaughan later ran in the 800 meter race placed second.

Sophomore Darnell Pratt, junior Preston Hogue and seniors Andrew Humm and Nicholas Wardell ran in the 4×400 meter relay and placed first. Pratt, Humm, Hogue and Wardell competed in the 4×200 meter relay and placed second. Pratt later competed in and won the 300 meter dash and the 500 meter race, with Wardell placing sixth and second in those events, respectively. Humm placed fourth in the 500 race. The boys team won the meet with a total of 94 points.

On the Girls’ team, senior Eileen Zohorsky placed second in the 1600 meter race and third in the 800 meter race.

The State Meet will take place on on Feb. 23 at the Prince George’s County Sports & Learning Complex, where a number of runners from Mt. Hebron’s Boys’ and Girls’ teams will go for the gold and represent Howard County.

On Jan. 10, Humm, Hogue, Wardell and Johnson ran the 4×400 meter relay at the Montgomery Invitational Meet. This relay team broke the previous school and county records for the 4×400. The time also qualified them to compete in the New Balance Nationals Indoor Meet from March 13-15 at The Armory in New York City.

This most recent meet followed the Indoor Track team’s success at the Howard County Winter Festival at the Prince George’s County Indoor Athletic Complex on Dec. 13. The Boys’ team won the meet, performing the best overall out of the 42 teams in attendance.

The Boys’ team scored a total of 52 points at the Winter Festival. Humm, Hogue, Wardell and Johnson broke the school’s existing record for the 4×400 meter relay.

Humm also placed third in the 500-meter race. In the 300-meter race, sophomore Darnell Pratt placed second.

Vaughan placed first in the 800-meter race. “I was competing against a runner from McDonough [who] I’ve never beaten before, and it was really memorable to pass him in the last 100 meters.”

Pratt, Hogue, Wardell and junior Micah Bullard ran in the 4×200 meter relay and placed second. These athletes and many more on the team have some of the top times in Maryland.

In the high jump, Walter Nelson, a freshman, placed seventh. In the pole vault, senior Tanner French also placed seventh.

Many of the girls on the team also made great times. Zohorsky and fellow seniors Hannah Schied and Jade Gant all ran at the meet, achieving better times than they had previously.

“Watching my teammate Eileen smash her personal records in the mile and 800 [meter]” was Schied’s favorite part of the meet, she said.

Juniors Megan Benoit, Michelle Hodge and Emma Fleck also improved their times at the Winter Festival. Fleck said her favorite event to run is “the 4×8 [relay], because I am motivated to run faster than I would in an individual race, so that my team does better.”

At the meet, sophomores Divya Gupta, Morgan Sigur and Taylor Sigur and freshmen Sarah Humm and Ebere Ugorji also performed exceptionally, creating new personal bests. The Boys’ and Girls’ teams both showed immense improvement overall at the Howard County Winter Festival.
